My Thoughts on: The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and the Horse by Charlie Mackesy
Have you ever picked up a book and felt like it gave you a little hug? That’s exactly how I felt reading The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and the Horse by Charlie Mackesy.
This delightfully illustrated book explores friendship, love, kindness, and what matters in life. Its handwritten script and whimsical drawings offer wisdom in the simplest and most beautiful way. Every page feels like a pause - a quiet moment to breathe and reflect. It’s the book you don’t just read once; you return to it, especially when your heart needs a little lift.
Mackesy’s characters - a curious boy, a cake-loving mole, a wary fox, and a wise horse - each bring their unique perspective. Their conversations, often no more than a few lines, are full of gentle truths and comforting reminders we sometimes forget in our busy, grown-up lives. One of my favourites? “What’s the bravest thing you’ve ever said?” asked the boy. “Help,” said the horse.
I’m genuinely tempted to take this book apart and frame some quotes to hang around my home (and probably the office!). It’s a reminder that kindness matters, that asking for help is brave, and that love shows up in the simplest ways. Watch my spaces!
Whether you read it cover to cover or flip to a random page when you need something for the soul, this book is a treasure. It is a quiet companion that reminds us, often without many words, that we are loved, we are enough, and we are not alone.
If you’ve read it too, I’d love to know - what was your takeaway?
